2010 Equality Rider: Brian Adkins

Name: Brian Adkins
Hometown: San Francisco, CA
Age: 28

I grew up in rural Ohio, raised on bluegrass music and tent revivals. As the son of a Pentecostal evangelist, I was schooled in conservative evangelical theology. I consider myself blessed to have learned the Gospel as a story of God’s love affair with humanity, before I encountered it in any incarnation that limited God’s acceptance. My grandmother’s unconditional love and acceptance made me feel invincible for much of my life. My parents and two biological sisters have been sources of inspiration, love and support. And my two younger adopted sisters, three nieces and nephew compel me to be a part of creating a world free of hate and worthy of their inheritance.

I got my bachelor’s degree in International Studies/ Russian from the Ohio State University. After college, I spent two years working with Somali Bantu and Sudanese refugees in Texas, before being commissioned as a faith-based community organizer. I then went to work on an interfaith organizing project, and helped present a conference on justice ministry.

In 2007, I relocated to San Francisco to work for a humanitarian relief agency serving Burmese, Bhutanese and Iraqi refugees in the Bay Area. In San Francisco I quickly discovered the Beloved Community of the historic and justice-oriented Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, where I am now a member. I was recently blessed with the chance to represent Glide Church at the Reconciliation Ministries Network’s Convocation, a gathering of open and affirming United Methodists.

Currently, I work as the grant writer for the San Francisco LGBT Community Center, where my primary focus has been building and maintaining relationships with corporations and foundations in support of the Center’s most critical community programs and services.

I’m excited to put my faith in direct action the 2010 Equality Ride. I plan to enter seminary to pursue a Master’s of Divinity in the fall of 2010.
