Name: Jason Conner
Hometown: Fairmont, WV
Growing up in a conservative household in a rural town I’ve learned a lot about what it means to feel different. I joined the Equality Ride to let others know that they aren’t alone. I believe that you can love God and yourself no matter who you are or what your sexual orientation. I was raised LDS (Mormon) in West Virginia and have lived in several states, most recently Utah. I work in the non-profit sector and love being involved in the community. I feel it is time for everyone to stand up against oppression in any form!
My goal is to show others that even though we are different we have much in common. I believe most discrimination comes from ignorance, and that most ignorance comes from a fear of the unknown. Since joining the Equality Ride, I have decided to do my part to decrease fear in others. Before joining this incredible team I was about as ‘closeted’ as it gets. I have decided to come out to all of my friends, family, and loved ones. It is an ongoing process that has been both refreshing and scary. I want to show my family and friends that they already know someone who is gay and that it doesn’t make any difference in the type of person I am or in how I (or anyone else) should be treated!
