Dr. James Dobson and his organization, Focus on the Family, a right wing political/religious organization, are two of the biggest sources of misinformation in the nation about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, couples, and families. Dobson’s untruths flow from his vast media network, including radio, books, videos, and films, as well as fax and email lists numbering in the thousands.
False claims by Dobson misinform millions of people daily, perpetuating unfounded fear and spiritual violence. Dobson states that LGBT people are out to destroy marriage and the family, yet he refuses to acknowledge that many LGBT couples have been together in committed relationships for decades. While making a myriad of unsubstantiated claims, he works to prevent LGBT couples who desire to form legal partnerships from doing so, thus also denying legal protections for their children. Additionally, his political influence in Congress is unmatched, and he has almost unfettered access to the White House.
Because of this, Soulforce, a national interfaith movement whose purpose is "freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from religious and political oppression," has extensively researched the false claims and untruths of James Dobson, and will be confronting these untruths directly in Colorado Springs on May 1, 2005. I will be attending this event, as well.
