RIGHT TO SERVE CAMPAIGN: Austin, Texas
STAND FOR EQUALITY ~ SIT-IN FOR THE RIGHT TO SERVE
On August 22nd, Rebecca Solomon entered the Army Recruitment Center at Dobie Mall with the intention of enlisting to serve her country.
On September 7th, Jesus Sanchez also entered the Army Recruitment Center at Dobie Mall with the the same goal.
Their enthusiasm was met with this edict: Openly gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals are not equipped to serve.
Recognizing this issue as it is, a legislative issue of pressing importance, as well as a Military concern, Rebecca and Jesus have requested meetings with area Congressional Representatives – Lloyd Doggett, Michael McCaul and Lamar Smith – to discuss both their personal qualifications for service and the upcoming Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would protect all soldiers from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. As of September 6th, Smith’s office was the only to reply, and their answer was a firm no.
On September 19th, Jesus and Rebecca returned to the Dobie Mall Army Recruitment Center once more. The office had been locked most of the day. They were subsequently arrested for entering. They spent the night in jail and were released on bond after being charged with criminal trespass.
