Soulforce in St. Louis, Alert #2: Letter-Writing

January 1, 1998 by soulforce

Greetings, Soulforce delegates! I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the arrival of spring in your part of the country. By the way, you’re one of nearly 200 Soulforce delegates from 31 states across the country who’ve signed up to go to St. Louis. Exciting, isn’t it?

I hope that by now you’ve written at least one letter to the Southern Baptist Convention executive committee member to whom you’ve been assigned. Time is drawing nigh … we’ll be in St. Louis in less than two months!

It’s critical that we do what we can to communicate the truth about homosexuality to SBC leadership before we arrive.

When you write your letter, the most important thing you can do is simply to "tell your story." Tell

  • who you are
  • where you live
  • what you do
  • something about your faith journey and
  • how you or a friend or loved one has been wounded by the church’s teaching about homosexuality.

Want to see what other Soulforcees have written to the SBC executive committee? Visit the Soulforce website, click on the "Journey to St. Louis" and then scroll down to "SBC executive committee correspondence." You’ll be amazed … and inspired.

After you write your letter, please

  • make a hard copy of your letter and mail it to Karen Weldin, Soulforce director of operations, at Route 4, Box 3534, Stigler, OK 74462. The letters will be compiled into a "scrapbook" for Soulforce to present to the Southern Baptist leadership while we’re in St. Louis.
  • send an electronic copy of your letter to Kara Speltz, Soulforce administrative coordinator, at kara@soulforce.org and tell her whether or not you’re willing for your letter to be posted on the website.

Let’s begin changing the hearts and minds of the Southern Baptists before we arrive in St. Louis! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at prosedoc@aol.com.

(Have you already made your hotel reservations? Check the Soulforce website at www.soulforce.org for a list of convenient hotels and information on signing up for community housing if you’re unable to afford a hotel room.)

God bless,
