The Equality Ride visit to Calvin College started with a lunch gathering of students, administrators, faculty and the Riders. After a mutually warm welcome, a dialogue began that would continue throughout the day. We gave a presentation to a packed house, and a lively question-and-answer session ensued. In between dinner and ice cream sundaes, some Riders participated in a panel to answerquestions about our journey around the country.
By the end of our visit, some students had expressed interest in becoming future Equality Riders, and the beginnings of a gay-straight alliance at Calvin were born. Ultimately, it was an incredibly encouraging and productive visit for all involved.
Our presence was a vital step in the evolution of the discussion of LGBT students within the Calvin community and society at large. While Calvin certainly has a long way to go, they are committed to creating positive change and we will continue to serve as resources in that process.
