2007 Equality Ride East Bus Route: Mississippi College

January 1, 1998 by soulforce

Mississippi CollegeThe Equality Ride visited Mississippi College on March 22, 2007. Although the MC administration decided against welcoming the Equality Riders onto campus, there were many interested students who met us at the edge of campus to have conversations. We were also greeted by some students who held supportive signs and stood with us in our vigil line.

While at Mississippi College, Equality Riders Amy Scott, Katie Higgins, Michael ‘Enku’ Ide, Kyle DeVries and Vince Pancucci were arrested for walking onto the campus to talk to students about the harmful nature of homophobic doctrine and policies. These riders also delivered an artistic representation of God’s LGBT children that included a Bible verse about God’s inclusive love.

At the end of the day we encountered a Clinton, MS police officer who pulled our bus over several times as we were on our way back to the hotel, yelled at our bus driver, and told us to leave town immediately. It was intimidating and disappointing that this type of behavior was exhibited by a police officer whose mission is to protect and serve. Fortunately, our visit to the Clinton, MS community ended on a positive note with a picnic on March 23, 2007 at Brighton Park that was well attended by community members and MC students.
